About Acupuncture

Acupuncture

Acupuncture prevailed in Kerala in the popular "Kalaripayattu." The bow of arrows on which BHISHMA lay until parting away is said to be acupuncture points But the popular belief is that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) or Acupuncture originated in China. Most probable is that it must have developed like Ayurveda.

Basic Philosophy

"Our father in Heaven...........Yours will be done on Earth as in heaven."

YIN and YANG

"In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless wasteland, and darkness covered the abyss....." Then God said, "Let there be light and there was light....." God then separated the light from the darkness. God called the light, 'day' and the darkness he called 'night'....."Thus the first positive Yin which is the day and the negative Yang which is the night came. What followed in creation then was either YIN or Yang in perfect balance. An order and harmony was established in nature as everything in nature, every specie in all animal and plant kingdom is one Yin and one Yang, in pairs and in total co-existence. Every Yin has a Yang and every Yang has a Yin, inseparable and beautifully bound.

The last creation

"God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them". The Yang man and the Yin female. The two of them become one body. Yin and Yang cannot exist independently.

YIN and YANG in body

TCM states that all the elements present in the macro cosmic universe in the state of yin and yang is present in the microcosmic body also as yin and yang. The trunk and four extremities are exterior and are Yang. The inside body has both yin and yang organs. Each yin organ has a yang and vice versa.

YIN ORGANS YANG ORGANS
LUNG LARGE INTESTINE
PERICARDIUM TRIPPLE WARMER
HEART SMALL INTESTINE
SPLEEN STOMACH
LIVER GALL BLADDER
KIDNEY URINARY BLADDER

In fact the five elements of nature Viz. Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood represented by the twelve internal organs of the body and their concept in the Acupuncture perspective is shown below:

ELEMENTS ORGANS CONCEPT
FIRE
Heart
Supreme Controller,Emperor
Small Intestine
Separator of Pure and Impure
Pericardium
Protector of the Emperor
Tripple Warmer
Controller of Temperature
EARTH
Spleen
Transportation and Distribution
Stomach
Rolling and Ripening
Metal
Lungs
Receiver of prana from Heaven
Large Intestine
Eliminator of waste
Wood
Liver
Judgment and planning
Gall Bladder
Decision making
Water
Kidney
Controller of storage of vital energy
Urinary Bladder
Controller of water

The Five Element Creative Cycle

Wood creates fire; the ashes from fire when cool forms earth; solid earth becomes metal; pores from metal springs water; water brings forth wood.

The Five Element Destructive Cycle

Fire melts metal, metal cuts wood, wood penetrates earth, earth absorbs water.

Charecteristics of Five Elements

Wood is solid and capable of working: Fire burns and combusts and develops heat: Earth is fertile, brings forth everything, and holds all strong and weak: Metal fuses, twists and changes forms: Water soaks, flows and cleans. There is nothing purely one element. Every element contains all elements but one element predominates. In a scale of 8, wood has 4\8 wood, 1\8fire, 1\8 earth, and 1\8 metal and 1\8 water and so on for all elements.

Acupuncture and other Systems of Medicine

Acupuncture accepts all other systems of medicine as each has its unique aspects and qualities. All systems of medicine are required for mankind and one has the freedom to decide which one is suitable to him according to the nature of his body, response of the body, financial implications, side effects etc.
Acupuncture is an alternative system of medicine that one can safely adopt for all body pains and other chronic and acute diseases. It is simple, cost effective and productive of results.
Acupuncture is to be tried with other systems of medicines for pain relief in post and pre operative cases, after cancer treatment etc. In fact all hospitals must have an acupuncture clinic to manage pain relief and other conditions which the major systems of medicine have no answer and scope.

       The Organs, Elements And Channels
  • Each organ has a channel or meridian through which vital energy flows through the body.
  • In each channel there are five command points for the five elements.
  • There are 60 command points for all channels and this alone is required to treat most of the diseases.
  • All organs have their respective relative channels and collaterals
  • All channels either start or end at the tips of the fingers or toes.
  • Elements move in a rotation in our body
Relationships of Five Elements With Body
  • The five elements are always inter promoting, interacting, over acting and counter acting. The internal organs of the body also do so.
  • YIN is all what stores energy and YANG is all what gives energy.
  • In the microcosmic body all solid organs are YIN and all hollow organs are YANG. When YIN and YANG are in balance there is perfect health.
  • Disease is described in relation to the imbalance of these forces.
  • Disruption of the free flow of energy due to climatic conditions of nature or mental\psychological\ physical conditions cause imbalance resulting in diseases and manifests though symptoms.
  • In acupuncture the therapist can examine which element and which organ is out of balance.
       How an Imbalance is Confirmed
  • Hearing the patient patiently.
  • The reading of the pulse , the basic pulse and the advance pulse which is entirely different from the other systems of medicine
  • The structure, colour, markings and texture of the tongue.
  • Yin and Yang function of organs with respect to its official functions
  • Biological Clock of the body and selecting treatment time.
  • Appearance, speech, body behaviour, movements etc
  • Eyes and its iris markings
  • Previous medical history
  • Evaluation of medicines taken
  • Climatic influence
  • Psychological state and its effects on the patient

  • Healing takes place from in to out, top to bottom and in the reverse order of their appearance
  • First treatment is to balance the stomach, the digestive organs and their functions, especially waste elimination function i.e in to out
  • Second, the brain has to accept the treatment. The patient has to believe in the treatment and the therapist .The psychological blocks have to be removed by the Therapist i.e. top to bottom
  • Third, the understanding that the last symptom will disappear first and the first symptom will disappear only last.
  • The treatment is administered by rectifying the symptoms which in turn erases the diseases.
  • "Acus" means needle and "puncture" means to penetrate. In acupuncture small, fine, sterile needles are put on selected meridian points to cure diseases.
  • "Touch Therapy" is done for children, adults who can't have a needle therapy and for psychologically disarrayed patients.
  • Acupuncture can scan a patient for blocks and other diseases and can take remedial measures without a lab or other machines.
  • Every patient is different and is treated in a unique manner.
